HADDONFIELD, NJ (SBN) — More than 200 members of the community joined local officials for the annual lighting of the “grand menorah” for the observance of the sixth night of Chanukah in Haddonfield on December 30.

Leaders of the Chabad Lubavitch of Camden County, an organization from the Hassidic tradition of Orthodox Judaism led the celebration, which included traditional Chanukah foods like sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) and potato latkes (pancakes), along with hot cider and hot chocolate.

Chanukah commemorates the victory of the Maccabees, a Jewish resistance group, against the Assyrian Greek empire in the second century BCE. It is associated with the legend that when the Jewish Temple was being rehabilitated after its destruction, only enough oil remained to light the temple menorah for one night but it miraculously lasted for eight days.

Entertaining the Haddonfield crowd was Chanukah music and a flame juggler. Refreshments were provided by Mia’s Meals in Haddonfield.

SBN News Director Steve Lubetkin attended the observance and filed this radio news report:
