BENSALEM, PA (SBN) — A Bensalem-based contractor, EDA Contractors, is seeing significant benefits in terms of reduced injuries and better customer and employee relations from a training program to provide construction workers with tools to improve their mental health and emotional intelligence.

According to EDA, the construction industry ranks second highest in suicide rates among major industries. Up to 90% of people who die by suicide have a mental health condition.

Factors contributing to higher suicide rates in construction include the male-dominated industry, stigma around mental health, and high stress due to long work hours and separation from family when working away from home.

EDA Contractors, founded by the guest on this edition of SBN Newsmakers/AUDIO, Ed DeAngelis, marked its 25th anniversary this year, with headquarters in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, and an office in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The company has seven consecutive years, including 2023, on the Top Workplaces list, and has been featured for its workplace culture and emotional intelligence leadership in a number of publications. EDA promotes mental health support and advocacy for its workers, and is a leading voice for emotional intelligence in the construction industry.

DeAngelis describes the contracting firm’s mental wellness program in this audio interview with SBN news director Steve Lubetkin.
