Rutgers Professor: Use Homestead Act to Reclaim Solar Power for the Public

Big-box stores and warehouses have billions of square feet on their roofs that could be covered with solar panels. An analysis from Environment America found the total area of rooftops on shopping malls and big stores such as Walmart and the Washington state-based company Costco is an estimated seven-point-two billion square feet. That’s the size of Seattle – three times over.

David Hughes is a professor of anthropology at Rutgers University and author of “Who Owns the Wind? Climate Crisis and the Hope of Renewable Energy.” Hear his ideas for covering those roofs with solar panels in this audio news report.
