Atlantic City Casinos managed to persuade New Jersey lawmakers to reduce their tax burden by some $55 million a year by warning of casino closures, but then went on to record record profits less than a year after the depth of the pandemic, according to reporting by Alison Burdo for The Press of Atlantic City and ProPublica.com, where she is a reporting fellow.

In an exclusive interview on SBN Newsmakers, Burdo describes the challenges of reporting on the complicated tax strategy employed by the casinos, involving “payments in lieu of taxes,” or PILOTs. PILOTs are being used elsewhere in New Jersey as an incentive for companies to develop a presence in a community. They enable companies to cap their tax liability for a period of years, while providing a guaranteed, predictable cash flow to municipalities, school districts and counties.
