CHERRY HILL, NJ — (SBN) — Financial scams take many sophisticated forms including phishing, spearphishing, vishing and SMishing, according to CyberScout Founder Adam Levin, author of Swiped: How to Protect Yourself in a World Full of Scammers, Phishers, and Identity Thieves. Regarding 2020 tax season risks, Levin feels that while the targets (employers, payroll companies, tax preparers and taxpayers) remain the same, and the approach – social engineering – is familiar, cyber criminals have advanced their playbook and are now better than ever at profiting from consumer’s personally identifiable information.

Levin, a nationally recognized expert on cybersecurity, identity theft, and personal finance who is the former director of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, says there are ways consumers can watch out for clues that someone is trying to defraud them.
